A Picture of a Sound

from Revolution is Now by Collapsing Opposites

lyrics

You cannot take a picture of a sound.
You cannot take a picture of a sound.
Audio is to video, but you can’t complete the ratio,
because you cannot take a picture of a sound.

Why’s there no such thing as a still sound camera?
Why’s there no such thing as a still microphone? Well,
let’s call a convention of the world’s best inventors.
Don’t come back without a still microphone!

A sound must have a beginning and an ending.
A sound must have a start and a finish.
When it is over, you can play it again,
but it can only exist in time.

A picture really has a lot of meaning.
These pictures really mean so much to me!
Well, you could keep repeating the world’s shortest sound,
but we know that it wouldn’t mean a thing.

A video has moving light and sound.
A video has moving lights and sounds.
If you go and pause it, you will see an image,
but you will not be able to hear a sound.

You cannot take a picture of a sound.
You cannot take a picture of a sound.
Well, you could capture light in the borders of a frame,
but when it comes to sound you cannot do the same.

I sat down with a recording engineer.
We talked about these things until they became clear,
like what we listen for isn’t all we hear.
We don’t even notice the little things in our ear,
and light always comes from some kind of source,
but where it comes from just isn’t important.
In our daily lives we don’t look at the sun.
We only care about what it shines on.
I wanna hear the sound straight from the source.
When the waves bounce around, we just ignore ‘em.
But, when light shines on things, reflections appear:
reflections of what I want to see here!
The way we understand lights and sounds
are fundamentally different, and we have found
that the human brain is biased towards light,
because vision is king and no one can deny that

sound cameras never were invented because they’re totally useless.
The human brain can’t handle it, so don’t even think about it!

Pictures are always changing over time.
Pictures are always changing over time.
Images degrade and your memories will fade,
because pictures are always changing over time.

If you are patient it will change.
If you are patient it will change.
I know that a photo is the slowest kind of movie,
but if you are patient it will change.

It’ll change! It’ll change! It’ll change! It’ll change! It’ll change!
If you wait long enough, that photograph that you took that time is going to change.
